Samaritans
Working in partnership with football
The Covid-19 pandemic has affected many people across the country. Football and football players are not immune to suffering the affects of the pandemic and how this may have impacted on mental health.
The Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA and Samaritans partnership is in place to support those within the local grassroots game to better understand mental health issues, how to look after your own mental health, and support others around you.
In 2021 the Samaritans met and consulted with local people from the grassroots game. Five focus groups and online surveys with volunteers, players, parents and officials highlighted key recommendations for grassroots football, such as:
• Improved awareness of Samaritans’ support
• Better signposting opportunities
• How to identify poor mental health
• How to support others around you
Whatever you’re facing, a Samaritan will face it with you
"Every day, Samaritans volunteers respond to around 10,000 calls for help. We’re here, day or night, for anyone who’s struggling to cope, who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure. Samaritans is not only for the moment of crisis, we’re taking action to prevent the crisis.
We give people ways to cope and the skills to be there for others. And we encourage, promote and celebrate those moments of connection between people that can save lives. We offer listening and support to people and communities in times of need."
