Stepping Over The Sidelines Programme

For women aged 18+ looking to get into volunteering and coaching football.

Thinking about volunteering at your local grassroots football club? Want to help coach or manage a team? Then our Stepping Over the Sidelines programme could be perfect for you.

The programme is designed for women aged 18+ with little to no previous playing or coaching experience who are thinking about getting involved in volunteering and coaching within football.

The need for positive role models to inspire young girls and show them that they do have a place in the game has never been greater. Whether it's at school, after school, at local clubs, or anywhere else, the Stepping over the Sidelines programme is an opportunity to start your coaching journey and meet new people just like you.

Fancy giving it a go or know someone who might? Keep reading to find out how you can get involved or sign up here.

What is Stepping over the Sidelines?

The programme is delivered over two face-to-face workshops and aims to provide an encouraging and supportive environment where aspiring coaches can take their first steps to learn about coaching, techniques and strategies, as well as getting to know other female coaches and individuals in the community.

The practical aspect of the workshop is designed to showcase what coaching looks and feels like on the pitch, ensuring that you leave feeling comfortable and confident to get involved with a session.

Who is it for?

The programme is perfect for women who want to take their first steps into coaching football. The aim to break down some of the barriers such as, “I have no playing or coaching experience” or “I don’t know the rules” and looks at skills and attributes that individuals may already hold which can be transferable to coaching football.

Why should I get involved?

Our previous cohort back in July saw 16 women successfully complete the programme and start their coaching journey in the grassroots game. They rated the programme 9 out of 10 and said their confidence levels have more than doubled after completing the programme.

When does the programme start?

The Stepping Over the Sidelines programme kicks off in November and is split into two modules. Attendees will be required to attend both dates.

Module 1

Topic: We'll work together to identify the transferable skills you already have that you could use as a coach. We will explore well known playground games and show you how you can turn them into football games. This is also a great opportunity to meet your mentors and get to know the rest of the group.

Date: Saturday 9th November 2024, 10am – 1pm
Venue: Wickersley School & Sports College, Bawtry Rd, Wickersley, Rotherham S66 1JL

Module 2

Topic: Back together again, you’ll be coaching and co-coaching to put all your new learnings into practice whilst discovering more activities that you can use in your own coaching sessions.

Date: Saturday 18th January 2025, 10am – 1pm
Venue: Wickersley School & Sports College, Bawtry Rd, Wickersley, Rotherham S66 1JL
